If you are planning to conduct a local job search, you may find that is a bit more complicated than simply sending a resume or filing out an application. Among other things, you should always know when you will be able to start the job, as well as the number of positions that are open. Even after you obtain this information, there are still other things that you will need to do in order to improve your chance of getting the job that you are applying for.
Valid Job Offers and your Local Job Search
Even though you may not realize it, there are actually two kinds of scam job ads that routinely pop up. Chances are, you already know that you should avoid classified ads that promise work at home opportunities or access to government jobs in exchange for a fee. Typically, if you call the government agency directly, they will be more than happy to direct you to a free application process. By the same token, you will also find that the vast majority of “work at home” ads require you to find your own customers.
Oddly enough, there is also a second type of scam job opening. This usually involves local businesses that truly aren’t interested in hiring. Rather, they simply take applications and store them away for later use. Even though applying for these jobs may bear fruit at some future date, you should always ask for an exact hire date before pinning your hopes on any given application.
Finding Employers During your Local Job Search
In some cases, you may be surprised to find that many employers do not advertise the fact that there are openings within the company. For example, supermarkets, gas stations, and other stores will always take an application if you wish to fill one out. Even though they say they are not hiring at this time, you never know when an opening will occur in that store, or elsewhere in the chain. This also applies to just about any business that has more than one staff member. Perhaps it is fair to say if the business has a listing in the yellow pages, or a sign outside their main place of business, you can, and should ask to put in an application for any work that you might be capable of doing. While you should not consider this a job opening, you may still get some considering if one does open up.
Understand the Company You will Be Applying To
If you have established that there is a legitimate job opening, you should carefully research the company in question. This includes understanding the vision and values of the business owner, as well as the general feelings among staff members. You will also be well served by understanding the competitive elements within the community, or anywhere else that the business owners have an interest.
There is no question that a local job search in modern times is a bit more complicated than it used to be.
