If you look in the newspapers, you will see that there are more jobs at the entry level in any given niche than mid to management. Unfortunately, if you have a college degree, or any kind of work experience, you will be designated as “overqualified”. When you need to jump into a related job cluster, this can easily be a death knell to your job hunting endeavors. Or is it? Based on 20 years of experience as a job hunter in a rural area, I can safely say the whole “overqualified” phenomena is one of the biggest myths in the modern economy.
Overqualified? Welcome to the Myth
When it comes right down to it, any and every business owner wants the most value for their dollar. If someone has advanced management skills or some other ability that enables them to work in a different department, it is value added in time of need. For example, if a manager has to leave because of illness or some other issue, hiring someone trusted from within the company may seem more appealing. That said, you still need to get past the people that say you are “overqualified” in order to make use of the basic opportunistic nature of business owners.
How to Get Past Being Overqualified
Surprisingly enough, the techniques that you need to use in order to get past being overqualified are very similar to other things that you need to do in the modern economy. This includes being willing to see past the job description and your current abilities to where you can grow in a reasonable amount of time. Now, I’m not suggesting that someone who has never used a screwdriver go out and apply for an automotive job. Rather, I am suggesting that if you have worked in any kind of white collar job, you can and should apply for anything white collar in the papers, as well as make contact with any and every company in your local area that may need your assistance. That said, before you start pounding ht pavement, you have to line up your resume, prepare interview answers, and know how to follow up after the interview.
Where Can I Learn how to Overcome Being Overqualified?
That is, without question, the easiest question to answer. I started out “overqualified” over 20 years ago, and managed to change job types three times. On two occasions, I stayed in the job cluster long enough to reach a management level position. This was all done in a rural area where white collar jobs were, and still are at a premium. I have put all of that information into one ebook that will tell you how to do everything from size up a classified ad to when to call and find out if you got the job.
Today, just about every person realizes that something needs to be done about the unemployment level in this country and abroad. I propose to show you a method that will help you get a job in your local area without spending months on end looking for jobs that are never going to materialize.
